NEW A.I. SCAM DRAINED CRYPTO SAVINGS. IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU!

One of our own, BEARDY, got scammed for pretty much his ENTIRE crypto portfolio in an Artificial Intelligence scam that I personally have NEVER heard of. Honestly, it scares the hell outta me. Here is what happened and what to look out for.

So the scam began when BEARDY got a message in a Telegram group from what looked like Brandon Quittem, a well-known person in the Bitcoin world. The message, which even included a blue check mark to seem official, mentioned that Brandon and another admin were opening a Lightning channel and would be presenting at a Minneapolis Bitcoiners meetup. Since it was a weekend and traditional banking would be slow, they asked BEARDY to send Bitcoin using the Lightning Network.

Trusting the message, beardy sent 0.25 Bitcoin twice, thinking it was needed to set up the channel. Then the scammer BEARDY another move, offering a deal on S21 miners at a much lower cost, claiming that Swan Bitcoin, a mining company, could provide them at a discount. Believing the offer, BEARDY sent an additional 38 Bitcoin, around $25,000.

What made this scam so dangerous was the use of AI to copy Brandon Quittem’s voice in real-time. BEARDY, skeptical about the request, called the number linked to the Telegram account to check the sender’s identity. To his shock, the person on the line sounded just like Brandon, using the same speaking style and tone. This kind of real-time voice cloning tech, which can recreate someone’s voice almost perfectly, is a terrifying step forward for cybercriminals.

This scammer’s ability to imitate a trusted person in real-time shows the need for stronger awareness and education on how to spot and prevent these types of attacks. Even seasoned members of the crypto world can fall for these advanced scams, proving it’s essential to confirm identities through more than one reliable source before making any transactions.

BEARDY's story is a new wake-up call for the entire crypto community. I mean, it was always ripe with scammers, but the use of such an advanced AI to pull off scams marks yet another big jump in the complexity of cybercrime, making it much harder to identify and avoid these dangers. And of course, it will not just be limited to crypto. Hey, some banks use voice authentification. That's gotta be done with now. As technology keeps advancing, it’s critical for everyone to stay alert and take steps to shield themselves from these more elaborate scams.

Presumably, the scammer could've used Voice.Ai

Quick Tips to Avoid Getting Fooled by Familiar Voices Online

So how do we adapt to the new reality of not trusting our eyes, our ears? You pick up the phone and hear a familiar voice telling a convincing story, but do you trust them? Well, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Verify through multiple channels: Never rely on a single point of contact, even if it seems authentic. Reach out to the person through other verified means (e.g., official social media accounts, official websites, or pre-existing contact information).
  2. Be wary of urgency: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure victims into quick decisions. Take your time and don't rush into any financial transactions.
  3. Double-check official announcements: For any significant events or offers, verify the information on official websites or social media channels of the organizations involved.
  4. Use secure, pre-established communication methods: For important financial transactions, use previously established and secure methods of communication, not suddenly introduced new channels.
  5. Be skeptical of unexpected deals: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be especially cautious of unsolicited investment opportunities or discounts.
  6. Implement multi-factor authentication: For any accounts that handle financial transactions, use strong multi-factor authentication methods.
  7. Educate yourself on the latest scam techniques: Stay informed about new scam methods, including AI-based impersonation techniques.
  8. Trust your instincts: If something feels off, even if you can't pinpoint why, take a step back and reassess the situation.
  9. Verify financial requests in person: For large transactions, try to meet in person or use video calls with trusted contacts to confirm details.
  10. Use code words or security questions: Establish secret phrases or questions with close contacts that a scammer wouldn't know.
  11. Be cautious with personal information: Limit the amount of personal information you share online, as scammers can use this to make their impersonations more convincing.
  12. Keep software and security measures updated: Ensure all your devices and applications are up-to-date with the latest security patches.

Remember, legitimate organizations and individuals will understand and respect your need to verify their identity and the authenticity of any requests, especially those involving financial transactions.
