The AI world keeps moving fast, with innovations popping up across different areas, including of course image editing.

Doubao introduces SeedEdit, a cutting-edge diffusion model for tweaking images based on simple text prompts. It strikes the perfect balance between reworking existing images and creating new ones by gradually blending an image generator's strengths with a powerful image editor. SeedEdit excels in making precise edits to high-quality images without prior training, even supporting repeated modifications without losing quality.

SeedEdit's Method

Editing images often lacks the necessary pairwise data to train models effectively. SeedEdit approaches this by using a text-to-image (T2I) model as a basic editing tool. These T2I models "edit" by crafting a new image from a prompt. SeedEdit enhances this capability by distilling it into an editing model conditioned on the original image.

The process involves generating and filtering editing data to align the T2I model with robust image editing functions. SeedEdit’s architecture interprets editing instructions accurately while ensuring top-notch image generation. Built on the Seed T2I model, it provides seamless edits with consistent quality, even across unlimited rounds of changes.

SeedEdit Results

SeedEdit can handle various editing tasks, including:

  • Relighting & Style Changes: Adjust lighting or turn a photo into a Pixar-style animation.
  • Advanced Object Manipulation: Add, remove, or tweak objects with precision, like making a house float or putting boots on a sheep.

ByteDance’s SeedEdit sets a new standard by enabling image edits through natural language prompts. With competitors like NVIDIA’s Edit, Alibaba’s Ace and Omnigen pushing similar boundaries, describing your vision is all it takes for image editing.

SeedEdit Demo

SeedEdit’s demo is available on Hugging Face: Link. The queue is currently quite long to try this tool so be patient once you submit your task for generation.

The demo has a limited query-per-second (QPS) rate and basic functionality. For a smoother experience, try Doubao or Dreamina apps. Note: The demo doesn't support multi-round edits, so uploading images multiple times may cause issues like overexposure. High-quality input images yield better results, while low-quality ones might show unintended changes, such as facial distortion.

Community Feedback

The Reddit discussion about SeedEdit shows mixed feelings about its impact on content creation:

  • Open Source Worries: Some users criticize SeedEdit for not being open source, comparing it to similar concerns with other ByteDance apps like Seed-Music.
  • Accessibility Struggles: While the app is free on HuggingFace, users report long queues, which makes access frustrating.
  • Content Overload vs. Need:
    • Some question why we need more content when there’s already too much.
    • Others argue that niche and custom content still has a place, even in a crowded media space.
  • AI’s Impact on Authenticity: There’s debate about whether AI edits make media less authentic or add value.
  • Profit-Driven Platforms: Many believe the flood of content mainly benefits advertisers and companies by keeping users glued to their screens.

Hi Marcos, thanks! I'm also making a directory site for the image/fillmaking/multimedia content creation tools in particular, to keep track on all of them as this industry keeps growing. Will put out link once I've got minimal functionality and content there.

That would be great, Rina! I just finished a course at MIT on Generative AI. It's really incredible how much the technology has evolved in the past two years and what the future may have in store for us. Keeping up with all of it—wow—that's hard! I'm looking forward to checking out your new directory. Can we sign up for updates?
