AI Judges Careers From Your Photo—Cool or Creepy?

Artificial intelligence is always up to something new, right? Now it's targeting your LinkedIn profile pic. Researchers from Wharton, Yale, and Indiana University have come up with a model called the "Photo Big 5." It analyzes facial photos to guess personality traits—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism—and connects those traits to career outcomes like salaries and promotions.

This study dug through 96,000 LinkedIn profile photos of MBA grads from top schools. The results? They found that people with more "desirable" traits tended to have higher salaries and better job mobility. For example, being in the top tier of these traits meant an 8.4% salary boost for men and 11.8% for women in their first post-MBA year.

Now, here's the twist: the correlation between AI’s predicted traits and actual self-reported ones is just 0.14 to 0.36. Not exactly spot-on, right? The researchers say it's about as good as traditional personality tests, but skeptics might call it lucky guessing.

Should We Care?

If AI can guess your personality and career potential from a photo, it could change how hiring works, partially replacing personality quizzes. But this also brings up big questions about privacy, individuality, and fairness. And let’s face it—bias in AI systems isn’t news.

The researchers admit their goal isn’t to push this tech for hiring, just to see what’s possible. But you can bet companies will eye this tech for its potential to shake things up.

This idea could lead to some useful research about how personality affects careers. But using static photos to guess personality traits is a leap—one that needs a lot more scrutiny. AI might give us new tools, but it’s also a reminder to ask: even if we can do it, even if it's possible, just because we can do it, should we?
