Reasoners: GPT-5 Details Are Revealed
OpenAI has introduced GPT-5, also known as "reasoners." This new AI system is designed to solve problems at a PhD level without needing external tools. Bloomberg dropped the story first.
OpenAI has developed a five-level classification to track progress towards AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and believes it is nearing the second level of their five-tier classification system. This level, termed "reasoners," is characterized by AI systems capable of human-level problem-solving.
At a recent all-hands meeting, OpenAI demonstrated a research project involving GPT-4, which they believe shows human-like reasoning abilities, signaling potential advancement to the "reasoners" level.
There are speculations about GPT-5 being released by late 2025, but with possible restricted access to research organizations or humanitarian projects only, due to its advanced capabilities, to prevent misuse. Which could very well be the case given there's an NSA guy sitting as a board memeber of OpenAI and the recent news of partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory to improve the safety of frontier AI models, focusing on biological risks and enhancing model safety evaluations.
Skepticism
Some people are skeptical about OpenAI's claims because of past exaggerations. If you open a Reddit discussion of these news, you can read that multiple users described OpenAI's 5-level classification as "vague" with one user concluding that OpenAI is "approaching Elon Musk levels of marketing nonsense"
